• Conversion Controversy: In January 2020, Mizanur Rahman Azhari faced controversy when 12 Indian Hindus entered Bangladesh on illegal visas and converted to Islam under his guidance. The media response and subsequent debate regarding conversions began after this episode.
• Ban on Speeches: Azhari’s speeches and mahfils (religious gatherings) have been banned in various places on charges of anti-national speech. A lawmaker in Bangladesh’s national parliament falsely claimed he’d made anti-national comments.
• Political Accusations: Former Minister of State for Religion Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah accused him of being a “product of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami” and threatened to take action against him for making certain statements. (But he claimed it’s false)
• UK Entry Ban: In October 2021, Azhari was invited by ‘Eye on TV’ to an Islamic conference in London, but the UK ‘Home Office’ blocked his entry. The verdict was based on claims that the individual had propagated hate speech and insulted the religious beliefs of others. He appealed the ban on entry, but the court sided with the government and canceled his visa.
